The Board of the Needle Arts Guild of Toledo met at the home of President Maria Nowicki at 6:45 pm on Thursday, August 07, 2008. Maria, Su Pellitieri, Anna Kerlin, Annette Hill, Nancy Wright, Caren Scarbrough and Diane Myers were present.
Nancy Wright reported that our bank account balances are: checking account $1315.30; savings at 5/3 Bank $1050.30; savings at Charter One $1071.75; and Certificate of Deposit at 5/3 Bank $2074.35 which is renewable on August 28, 2008.
President Maria Nowicki asked for items to include on our next meeting agenda. Su asked that we advise members of the next newsletter deadline, which is the 25th of the month. Board members will send information to Su about our November program at the 577 program, and about our recent children’s program, as well as reminders about which members will be providing refreshments.
Diane Myers would like to report to members about Karlynn Thompson winning ribbons at Wood County Fair.
Board members discussed allowing photography at our show.
We will advise members about the Winterthur exhibit at the Toledo Museum of Art which includes many embroidered items. The exhibit continues through September.
Julia Stange has passed on excellent feedback about our Children’s class, after her granddaughter’s participation in the July event. Everyone completed an entire project and we sent everyone home with enough supplies to complete another. Sunday in the Garden went well, although attendance was not as high as in past years.
Su reports that Peverley will circulate a sign-up sheet for volunteers for the show. We will encourage members to help with all phases of the show.
It is noted that our September board meeting falls during National seminar, therefore the board will not meet in September.
Diane asked to proof the programs again this year before they are printed. Su said she could if she is at the library when we leave on Friday. By not having critiques this year, we should be able to finish judging and set up faster.
We will form Nominating Committee in September.
Members will be asked to bring “stash” items in September to contribute to a basket which will be given as a prize for a drawing from information cards filled out by visitors. At the annual show, will we have a non-judged display of some sort. We will discuss this at the regular August meeting. Diane will make up a display about Donna Mohn’s Golden Needle Award, and techniques that Donna has taught over the years. We may develop a display about Irene’s Stitch of the Month program this year.
For our opportunity drawing for this month, Annette will donate a gift box of items including crystal, a painted canvas, an antique doily, and more. Maria will donate a gift for the September drawing.

Minutes of the Board Meeting of the Needle Arts Guild of Toledo - June 4, 2008
The Board of the Needle Arts Guild of Toledo met on June 4 at the home of President Maria Nowicki at 6:30 pm. Maria, Treasurer Nancy Wright, Secretary Annette Hill, Past President Marianne Mussett, ROC Representative Anna Kerlin, and Newsletter Editor Su Pellitieri were present.
Treasurer Wright reported that the checking account balance is $1270.86, the savings account balance at Charter One Bank is $1070.86, the savings account balance at Fifth Third is $1050.21. The Fifth Third CD is due for renewal in August.
Maria reported that she received an email from Luann Glover of the Toledo Weavers Guild. They are seeking teachers for projects for a November program designed to teach teachers projects to pass onto classes. This is co-sponsored by the Ohio Art Education program. The deadline to sign up is the end of June. Maria will share the details with our members at the regular meeting. The teachers who volunteer will not be paid, but the cost of supplies for the projects will be provided.
Caren Scarbrough will teach Chottie’s plaid at July meeting. She has procured permission to copy the instructions for our use. A copy of the book will be sent to us to use as a door prize that night.
After the next meeting we need people to stay afterward to move library stuff to our new location in cupboards in a storage room our behind current location.
Regarding our recent First Sunday event, we had about 9 members present demonstrating embroidery and we had four children and three adult participants in our plastic canvas stitching project. Some of the adults appeared to be nuns who were learning the technique to pass on to children in their classrooms. Maria left a message with Patty Toneff at TBG, advising her to continue to advertise for us in the same way for each month that we do it.
Su will contact Cathy Studer for the list of Secret Stitcher pairings for the past year to be sure that we have the information at the coming meeting.
Maria reported that Caren provided information to her concerning our weekend stitch-in which is scheduled for November at the 577 Foundation in Perrysburg. Participants who wish to purchase the book will need to pay $22.00. Purchase of the book is optional. Others may take notes on the process for constructing the cloth books that we will be making that day. The book is by Pam Sussman and is entitled “Fabric Art Journals.”
There is an Arts in the Garden organizational meeting later this month (June), and Anna will attend the meeting. It is probably too late to organize a raffle. The wreath raffle for Heralding the Holidays this year will probably be just for NAGT benefit.

Maria reported that PBS’s Antique Roadshow filmed a segment at the Louisville office in the national exhibit. Maria will burn a copy of the show to DVD, and we will show it at an upcoming meeting.
Maria suggested that in June for our getting to know each other prompt – we will ask members about their most frustrating project.

Minutes of the Board Meeting of the Needle Arts Guild of Toledo - April 30
The Board of the Needle Arts Guild of Toledo met at the home of President Maria Nowicki on Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at 6:45 pm. Board members Nancy Wright, Diane Myers, Su Pellitieri, Maria Nowicki, Caren Scarbrough, Anna Kerlin, and Annette Hill were present.
Maria reported that she had received an email regarding the First Sunday programs at TBG. We have been asked to participate at the first one which is scheduled for May 4. We will demonstrate embroidery and also have a small project available for visitors. Patty Toneff from TBG advised that just a small motif outline like we have done in the past was adequate. Although we were advised that we should be prepared for 75 participants, our experience is that less than ten people are interested in participating. Most of the 900 people who attend just look and move on. Anna Kerlin has a variegated yarn that she has used to stitch samples of stitches on plastic canvas. We will have these materials available for interested visitors. Demonstrations will be done in the Arts Abilities Studios. None of us know where that is or how much room is available for us there. Maria will make calls to investigate and will advise us by email, but Diane will call several members who usually participate and do not have email.
Maria advised that she attended the Arts in the Gardens organizational meeting on April 29, which she felt had an air of hostility. There is controversy between the TBG staff and the Resident Organizations Council about combining Arts in the Gardens with the last of the First Sundays events in August. The ROC would prefer that Arts in the Gardens remain a separate event.
Treasurer Nancy Wright reports that our checking account balance is $1735.34 and our savings account balance at 5/3 Bank is $1000.03. We have a CD with a balance of $2074.35, and a balance of $1069.52 in a savings account at Charter One Bank. Su Pellitieri provided to Nancy a record of payments that she has received from Group Correspondence Course participants. Su has received the books for the Hardanger GCC course and has begun to distribute them to participants.
Maria asked for suggestions for our self-introduction topic for our next meeting. Each member will be asked to share “What is your favorite technique?”
Nancy Wright advised the board that she has begun investigating along with Diane Myers the possibility of having a Saturday stitch-in at the 577 Foundation on River Road in Perrysburg. The people there suggested that a retreat would be the best type of event to have, rather than just a stitch-in. One idea that was discussed was for Caren to begin teaching the fabric book construction technique for our Back to Basic stitch book from our monthly meeting programs. Nancy and Diane will investigate the first two weeks in October, and we will plan on doing a pot luck for our meals.
Maria said that she will ask at our regular meeting for a volunteer to assemble the wreath for the raffle at TBG. Given the current friction between TBG and the ROC, we cannot be sure how things will be in December.
Before our June meeting, when we hold our annual pot luck and the Get It Finished program, Diane wants to send an invitation to past members who don’t attend any longer to make it a “Coming home” kind of meeting. Diane wants to put together a little bag with nice gifts in it and sell tickets for an opportunity drawing for $1 each. The Board agreed with the plans and we implement them.
At our show we will remember to do a give-away from a drawing out of contact information cards filled out by show visitors.
GLR Representative Caren Scarbrough reported on the spring meeting which was held at regional seminar in Madison, Wisconsin. The Regional officers asked for a vote to do away with the traveling teacher program because of lack of participation. The chapter representatives voted to approve the motion. Melba Moore moved that the GLR Region donate $2000 to National EGA. Caren noted from financial figure handouts provided at the meeting that GLR has $70,000. The chapter representatives resisted and our National President, Carol Dam, who happened to be present, was called on to answer as to why national needs the money. She spoke about increasing operating expenses and a desire not to increase dues. The representatives then voted to approve the donation. A third issue was present for a vote. The Regional officers moved that we set up a fund to award a first time attendee scholarship for each Regional seminar, but the representatives had questions about how the winner would be determined, and what parameters would be used to make the choice. Representatives voted the proposal down and the regional officers will work up guidelines before the item is brought to a vote in the future. Caren noted that once again the region has old information on record for our officers, Maria will AGAIN send a list of our current officers and contact information to the regional board, this time to the current regional director, Chris Kyles.
Annette has recharted the fish project to make it a flat more simple shape for our children’s program this summer. She will have the new charts available at our May meetings for members to trial stitch and troubleshoot.

Minutes of the Board Meeting of the Needle Arts Guild of Toledo - March 6, 2008
President Maria Nowicki hosted the March Board meeting at her home on March 6, 2008 at 6:45 pm. Besides Maria, Caren Scarbrough, Nancy Wright, Anna Kerlin, Marianne Mussett, and Annette Hill were present.
Treasurer Nancy Wright reports that we have received a thank you note from the national office for our memorial donation dedicated in memory of Marge Toth, but the check has not yet been cashed. Our checking account balance is $1405.68. Our savings account balance is $2069.52 and our CD balance is $2074.00. Nancy provided board members with information she received about a three month CD offer that pays a $50.00 bonus in addition to the interest. We will investigate this further and Nancy is still working with bank officials to update signature cards on all accounts.
Membership Chairman Diane Myers has provided to Maria a report detailing that 20 members renewed membership in December. One member up for renewal declined because of work conflicts. Diane also reported that we are on the Sanger Branch library schedule for the July display case to promote our show. Membership cards are being prepared for all members. A $3.00 refund is being given to those who renewed in December and were overcharged because of a misunderstanding about the effective date of the dues increase.
Show Chairman Peverly Hormann reported to Maria by email that we need a volunteer to house our show judge Carol Lynn Stratton and one guest in September. Maria will ask for a volunteer at the regular meeting.
GLR Representative Caren Scarbrough will attend the next region meeting at Seminar in Madison, Wisconsin. She reports that there are still openings available for classes at Seminar and that a bus trip to Madison is available originating in Akron with three stops on the way to Madison to pick up EGA members attending Seminar.
Anna and Maria met and decided on a plastic fish and worm project that can be used as a bookmark or a piece of jewelry. This ties in with the Nature theme of the TBG. We will schedule the first class for Tuesday, June 24 from 9:30 to 11:30 am, with a second class offered on Tuesday, July 15 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. We will aim for 15 kids each time. A sign-up sheet will be distributed at the next regular meeting, and the pattern will be distributed to members interested in helping so that they can test the pattern and troubleshoot any problems.
Maria has asked that Su place a reminder in the newsletter about refreshment volunteers.
Michigan State Day and Indiana State Day information is available and will be presented to members. There are also Extended Study programs available which will be promoted. TBG volunteer opportunities will be promoted to members.
Maria is investigating other meeting location opportunities. Gander Mountain has a meeting room available for groups for free. The room has space for 15 people at tables with a few more on chairs only. Libraries limit a group’s use to 4X per year and we will use that quota up for just our show.
Maria shared a letter received from the Resident Organization Council. They advise that TBG has no authority to disband their organization. They will continue to meet and help organize events on the dates that they have already set up, despite disagreement with TBG management.
Maria advises that the EGA National Exhibit “Through the Needle’s Eye” will review all entries postmarked by March 23 and received by April 1. Golden Thread Award nominations are due in early May. Donna Mohn has been suggested for nomination and nominations will also be taken at the regular meeting.
Our member, Deb Williams, was recently injured in a car accident. Kay Griffith has been hospitalized again. We will procure greeting cards for both of them.
Su Pellitieri reports that there will be one more opportunity at our regular meeting for members to sign up for the Group Correspondence Course. Members who sign up must pay, and books will be ordered.
We will begin to investigate organizing a weekend retreat, stitching demonstrations, or similar get-together at either Maumee Bay State Park or the 577 Foundation in Perrysburg.

Minutes of the Board Meeting of the Needle Arts Guild of Toledo
January 3, 2008
The Board of the Needle Arts Guild of Toledo met at the home of President Maria Nowicki at 6:45 pm on Thursday, January 3, 2008. Maria, Marianne Mussett, Su Pellitieri, Anna Kerlin, Caren Scarbrough and Annette Hill were present.
Maria brought the meeting to order and suggested that the board discuss goals for the year. Maria reported that Beth Thompson will continue as our outreach chairman and Anna Kerlin will continue as our Resident Organization Counsel representative. Maria will check with Marilyn Freeman about continuing with welcoming our new members and guests, and with Cathy Studer about continuing as Education Chairman. Su Pellitieri will continue as Newsletter Editor. Caren Scarbrough can continue as Great Lakes Region representative for this year, but when she becomes President next year, it is preferred that someone else fulfils that role. Annette indicated that she would be willing to fill in for that year.
Maria shared some ideas that Diane Myers had suggested for increasing membership and volunteerism among all members. Other chapters reported in our last edition of Needle Arts about outreach programs where members taught stitches to the public at libraries and other public meeting places. We will consider similar programs to increase our exposure to the public. We also discussed sending follow-up emails or postcards to members when they haven’t been to meetings for a while. Maria suggested using a sign-in sheet to track who attends each month. Further discussion included doing a display window at library branches and pursuing television promotion of our annual show. We will investigate participating with the TBG web site further. We would like to publicize Kay Griffith’s Golden Thread award in The Blade to help promote awareness of the guild. Maria will ask Nancy Wright to contact Nancianne Cherry at the newspaper about articles other than the show. We could also suggest articles about various members who are Mastercraftsmen.
Peverley Hormann has asked for suggestions for judges for this years show. Su will provide information about past judges to her from our show records.
Maria asked about our feelings about fundraising. Marianne suggested that we promote the idea that people can donate to the guild as a tax-deductible donation to a 501C Non-profit organization. Su will add a blurb in the next available space in the newsletter about it. The board also discussed having an opportunity drawing/raffle type of fundraiser. We would all learn the same stitches, but perhaps use a challenge format so that members personalize it for their own tastes.

The Board of the Needle Arts Guild of Toledo met at the home of President Maria Nowicki at 6:45 pm on Thursday, January 3, 2008. Maria, Marianne Mussett, Su Pellitieri, Anna Kerlin, Caren Scarbrough and Annette Hill were present.
Maria brought the meeting to order and suggested that the board discuss goals for the year. Maria reported that Beth Thompson will continue as our outreach chairman and Anna Kerlin will continue as our Resident Organization Counsel representative. Maria will check with Marilyn Freeman about continuing with welcoming our new members and guests, and with Cathy Studer about continuing as Education Chairman. Su Pellitieri will continue as Newsletter Editor. Caren Scarbrough can continue as Great Lakes Region representative for this year, but when she becomes President next year, it is preferred that someone else fulfils that role. Annette indicated that she would be willing to fill in for that year.
Maria shared some ideas that Diane Myers had suggested for increasing membership and volunteerism among all members. Other chapters reported in our last edition of Needle Arts about outreach programs where members taught stitches to the public at libraries and other public meeting places. We will consider similar programs to increase our exposure to the public. We also discussed sending follow-up emails or postcards to members when they haven’t been to meetings for a while. Maria suggested using a sign-in sheet to track who attends each month. Further discussion included doing a display window at library branches and pursuing television promotion of our annual show. We will investigate participating with the TBG web site further. We would like to publicize Kay Griffith’s Golden Thread award in The Blade to help promote awareness of the guild. Maria will ask Nancy Wright to contact Nancianne Cherry at the newspaper about articles other than the show. We could also suggest articles about various members who are Mastercraftsmen.
Peverley Hormann has asked for suggestions for judges for this years show. Su will provide information about past judges to her from our show records.
Maria asked about our feelings about fundraising. Marianne suggested that we promote the idea that people can donate to the guild as a tax-deductible donation to a 501C Non-profit organization. Minutes of the Board Meeting of the Needle Arts Guild of Toledo
SEPTEMBER 6, 2007
The Board of the Needle Arts Guild of Toledo met at the home of its President, Marianne Mussett, on Thursday, September 6, 2007 at 6:30 p.m. In addition to Marianne, Karlyn Thomson, Anna Kerlin, and Annette Hill were present.
Marianne reported that Toledo Botanical Garden has sent us an invoice for our annual fee in the amount of $120.00. Because we were not provided meeting space for our July meeting, we will deduct one month’s fee. Marianne will write a letter in explanation.
Treasurer Karlyn Thompson presented an email from TBG regarding Heralding the Holidays. We have been charged $50.00. In past years, we have not had to pay because we run the raffle for the event to raise money. We have also not had to provide volunteers due to the time our members spend manning the raffle table. They have a Heralding the Holidays organizational meeting the first Thursday of the month and we are to send a representative to those meetings. We will ask for a non-board member to attend for NAGT, since we have a conflict with our board meeting. We also need someone to be in charge of the raffle. Karlyn also reports that our savings account balance is $2053.95 and our checking account balance is $1944.46. We had $78.40 in expense for printing and postage. We also refunded Marge Toth’s dues to her family subsequent to her death.
Some members are reportedly disappointed about our October class being scaled back. If members do not want to participate we will refund their deposit, provided that they give Kay notice before the kits are ordered up.
We need a Nominating Committee for next year, and nominees for President, Program Chairman, and Treasurer. The nominees will be presented at the October meeting, and voting will take place in November. We can also start looking for a show assistant chairman for next year.
Diane Myers emailed a report to Marianne about show progress. Everything is well planned and we have all of the volunteers which we will need. The biggest concern is the time constraints that we will face during judging and set up.
Karlyn sent a report to Su updating our membership list, which she prepared by cross-checking it with actual dues paid, we have reduced the membership list to about 45 members. This will reduce the number of newsletters being mailed out unnecessarily. Marianne has been provided with potential member contacts that Su received through the website and will follow up with phone calls to advise them of our show.
Marianne will ask for reports about regional seminar. We have “Get It Finished” at September meeting. Our program is Huck weaving, taught by Katherine Thompson.

Minutes of the Board Meeting of the Needle Arts Guild of Toledo
August 2, 2007
The board of the Needle Arts Guild met at the home of President Marianne Mussett on August 2, 2007 at 6:30 pm. The following members were present: Marianne Mussett, Su Pellitieri, Karlyn Thompson, Maria Nowicki, Donna Mohn, Annette Hill, Diane Myers and Anna Kerlin.
Marianne reported that she has contacted Anita Streeter, the Executive Director of EGA, about one time a year membership renewal. Anita advised that this policy has been considered before, but regional directors were against it. She personally is in favor of once a year renewal, and recommended that Marianne contact Carol Dewitt at GLR to suggest it again. Marianne will write to her to ask them to consider it again.
Secretary Annette Hill reported that she would be typing June minutes soon. Donna Mohn took minutes at the July meeting, and Annette will type all outstanding minutes and email them for inclusion on the web site.
Treasurer Karlyn Thompson reports that our savings account balance is $2053.95. In April, May and June we earned $8.79 in interest. Our checking account balance is $1667.66.
Board members discussed the number of members we had volunteering at the 1st Sunday events in May and June. We had about 9 members each month. Anna will keep track in the future.
Diane Myers provided to Secretary Annette Hill the letters written on behalf of our nomination of Kay Griffith for the Golden Needle award for our records.
Outreach Chairman Beth Thompson asked Marianne for an update from Diane about bookmark projects for the Outreach Program. Diane would like to invite the director of the Penta programs to our October meeting to accept our donations of bookmark awards. Beth has reported our Brooks kit donations twice to our regional officers for her periodic reports and no mention is given in Needlearts about our programs. Annette suggested that the Needlearts publication probably needs separate submissions.
Diane Myers is writing a tribute to Marge Toth for our newsletter and asked for information on how long she had been a member. Our records are incomplete and Diane will be contacting our national office for information.
Show Chairman Diane Myers provided entry forms to Show Registrar Su Pelitieri, and will be bringing additional forms to the meeting for members to use to enter the show. Diane also has flyers available to promote the show. Diane wants to have new ribbon for “Best of Show,” instead of “Judge’s Choice.” We have received feedback that judges pick their favorite instead of a best of show. Marianne wants to take it to the membership for discussion and asked for definitions of what our ribbons mean from Diane. We will present the suggestion of a new ribbon to the membership.
Maria reports that Timeless Stitches in Tecumseh is donating $25.00, and Kaleidoscope already $25.00 for show expenses for which they will receive credit in our promotional literature.
Cathy Studer will help the judge during show judging on Friday. Donna Halpin will be our judge this year, and won’t be staying overnight. Su needs to know how the judge wants to handle critiques. Karlyn will need the judge’s Social Security number.
The board discussed our options for memorializing deceased members. For Shirley Fisher, we collected $190 and NAGT contributed another $110 to bring it up to $300. For Joyce Merrill, we passed the hat and made a donation to EGA. For Jean Malcolm, who was not active recently, but had been a member for many years, few members knew and we did nothing. The board decided to continue to decide on a case by case basis because the situations vary so much.
Marianne is going to investigate the cost of a post office box for our use since national and regional apparently have difficulty updating addresses when we get new officers.
Regarding membership, the board discussed how many members we actually have. Information from national does not coincide with our records.
Marianne discussed last month’s fiasco when TBG cancelled our room reservation and substituted a room that only accommodated 15 people. Because our meeting attendance is between 35 and 40 members, we needed to find another meeting place. The meeting was held at Something Extra. Marianne was emailed on July 3 about this for our meeting on the 11th and was not able to connect with the TBG contact until the Monday before the meeting. Marianne and other officers spent many hours making alternate arrangements and contacting members. Marianne and several members attended the ROC meeting and vented. TBG apologized profusely, but our general feeling is that this might very well happen again. Marianne will write a letter to TBG asking for credit for the displacement with a reduction to our rent.
